Help Us Fund Access to Fresh Produce for Families in the South Bronx

New York Common Pantry is excited and proud to announce our FIRST EVER crowdfunding campaign! The LIVE HEALTHY! program is raising $5000 to purchase Health Bucks, $2 coupons that can be used to purchase fresh produce at Greenmarkets, for their nutrition workshop participants at the Lincoln Hospital Greenmarket in the South Bronx.

For the second year in a row, Live Healthy! has partnered with GrowNYC to provide nutrition and culinary workshops at the Lincoln Hospital Greenmarket in the South Bronx every Tuesday and Friday from mid-July through the end of October. Last year they found that these Health Bucks were incredibly valuable for their attendees who felt encouraged to cook with more fresh produce after sampling our recipe of the week, but lacked the financial ability to purchase a new food item.

By increasing purchasing power with these Health Bucks, they were able to empower people to help increase their family’s fruit and vegetable intake as well as increase business for the local farmers at the market. At NY Common Pantry, this touches upon three of our core principles: options, access and health. We believe in reducing hunger and food insecurity through a whole-person approach that includes not just nutritious, fresh food pantry packages (which our members do receive!), but also through empowering community members and increasing access by connecting them to resources, as well as educating on the importance of a nutritionally sound diet and active living in order to make healthier choices for their families through the Live Healthy! program.

Dear NYCP Community,

The recently released Federal budget proposal is full of cuts to certain programs that greatly impact those we serve at New York Common Pantry, and we know that we are in for some difficult times ahead.

We remain committed to serving every person who walks through our doors at New York Common Pantry. We will turn no one away and make sure everyone is given a fighting chance to succeed, to have adequate resources so they can have proper nutrition, pay their bills and send their children to school ready to learn. We know you care, and are here to remind you that we will continue to do these things, no matter how hard the times are ahead. Put simply: We will step up.

NYCP’s New Transit Van

We have a new Transit Van for use in our Nourish program thanks to the Ford Motor Company, as part of Robin Hood Foundation’s Night for NYC. The van’s size and flexibility allows us to provide food to seniors living in neighborhoods that are not accessible to larger delivery vehicles. Thank you, Ford Motor Company and Robin Hood Foundation!

New York Common Pantry receives grant from AIG



NYCP’s partners at AIG have provided us with a substantial grant in addition to their volunteer support.  The grant will be used to support our food distribution and other programs.

In addition to financial support, AIG’s employees have provided over 850 hours of service to the agency over the past three years.   In addition to serving dinner in the Hot Meals program, AIG volunteers help pack and distribute grocery packages to families in our Choice Pantry.   The grant is a result of the growing partnership between the Pantry and AIG, which is based in long-term volunteerism and on-site participation in multiple food drives.  “AIG’s support for our food programs alongside their dedicated volunteerism comes at a crucial point where we continue to see new people needing our services,” stated Stephen Grimaldi, Executive Director of NYCP.

Thanks to the funding from AIG, NYCP will continue to be able to provide healthy food and other services to increasing numbers of Pantry members and visitors.

2015’s Fill the Bag Benefit: A Night of Community

On March 10, 2015, nearly 350 supporters of the Pantry came to Gotham Hall for our 2015 Fill the Bag Benefit.  This year our honorees included Linda E. Holt and Wells Fargo.  Linda was the recipient of The Estée Lauder Companies Distinguished Volunteer Award and Wells Fargo received the Corporate Partner Award.  We were proud to celebrate their achievements and recognize their contributions to ending hunger in our city.

Mistress of Ceremonies Cheryl Wills

Cheryl Wills of NY1 served as our Mistress of Ceremonies, welcomed the night’s guests, and announced that Noby Rivera, NYCP Food Programs Associate, would be named NY’er of the week.  Instead of showing a video, this year we curated a community parade, which included staff, Pantry members, donors, and supporters to show our guests the integral nature of the Pantry.

The evening also included a digital silent auction, wine wall, and paddle raise.  We are happy to share that the evening raised over $705,000 to support the Pantry’s vital work.

SOUP-er Bowl 2015 Results!


The final pass has been made, the final point has been scored … New York Common Pantry’s 2015 SOUP-er Bowl has come to an end.   Tremendous thanks to all of the schools and organizations that participated in this year’s collection.  We are so grateful to be providing food items that keep our Pantry Members’ stomachs full and their bodies warm, especially during this very cold winter.

We are excited to announce that, this year’s SOUP-er Bowl resulted in the collection of 19,678 items.  A special congratulations goes out to this year’s SOUP-er Bowl champion.  It’s a THREE-PEAT: The Buckley School wins again!!!  Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Buckley community, the school collected 10,000 items!  The pantry is overflowing with cans and soup and boxes of pasta thanks to this incredible score.  Fantastic job, Buckley!

With a very impressive collection of 3,087 items, our second place winner is St. Bernard’s!  Our rookie team, Hewitt, is our third place winner with a collection of 2,896 items—incredible!

Additional thanks to all of our collecting teams:  Spence, Horace Mann, Trevor, East Side Middle School, Temple Emanu-El Nursery School, East Side School for Social Action and Children’s Aid Society for participating in the 2015 SOUP-er Bowl!

$5,341,950 Grant Received for Eat Smart New York Education Through Our Live Healthy! Program



New York Common Pantry (NYCP) has been awarded a grant of $1,048,390 per year for 5 years from the New York Office of Temporary Disability Assistance to institute an Eat Smart New York (ESNY) nutrition education program in parts of Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens.   The program is expected to reach as many as 4,800 participants each month through over 20 community partner agencies.

The ESNY program will enhance and expand NYCP’s nutrition education efforts, including its Live Healthy! program, which presents a holistic curriculum including active living, social supports and self-esteem elements to educate adults and children, about healthy eating and nutrition, active living and resiliency skills to improve their overall quality of life.  It will provide a greater impact in the fight against obesity and other nutrition-related issues faced by SNAP-eligible residents in the city.

ESNY is a federally funded program that promotes the acquisition of life-long healthy habits in order to prevent nutrition-related health problems by providing free nutrition and anti-obesity workshops.

Faces of NYCP: Meet Ricky


Ricky was a part of New York City’s workforce for many years.  Born in Hell’s Kitchen and a New Yorker all his life, Ricky says he first went to work in his father’s construction business, and later worked for both financial firms and newspapers.  Ricky has a small apartment near our building on 109th Street but little income at this point in his life.  After he pays rent he has little money left over for food, so he comes to New York Common Pantry for hot meals several times a week.  Today we meet an increasing number of seniors like Ricky, who’ve made their contribution to the city and now need our help.

NY Common Pantry was honored to welcome a visit on July 2, 2013 by Guillaume Garot, France’s Minister of State for the Agrifood Sector, along with Bertrand Lortholary, Consul General of France in New York City, and other guests who toured the Pantry to learn about our programs and the people we serve.

We were proud to help them learn about our Choice Pantry system, food rescue efforts, and other programs that work to reduce hunger and promote dignity and self-sufficiency for residents of New York City.



We Are Redburn’s Charity of the Year!


We’re proud to have been named Redburn’s Charity of the Year for New York City. Staff of the independent equities broker will take part in volunteer and fundraising projects with us over the next 12 months, and the company will make a cash award to support our programs.

Our Fill the Bag Benefit was a Great Success!


Our annual Fill the Bag Benefit was one of our most successful!  Board Chair Wendy A. Stein and Executive Director Stephen Grimaldi unveiled our name change to New York Common Pantry!  Maurice DuBois, WCBS-TV news anchor, was Master of Ceremonies and Karl Green, Director of Furniture and Decorative Arts for Bonhams in New York, served as auctioneer.

Honorees included Dr. Karen C. Altfest, who received the Founder Award.  Community Partner Awards were presented to Fairway Market and Lauren Bush Lauren, FEED.

Common Pantry receives Kathy Goldman Innovation Award from Food Bank For New York City

New York Common Pantry is the proud recipient of Food Bank For New York City’s Kathy Goldman Innovation Award. Formerly called the Member of the Year Award, it was renamed this year to celebrate Kathy Goldman, founder of Food Bank For New York City. The Common Pantry received this prestigious award for Pantry Direct, the technology component of our Choice Pantry and other innovations.

Pantry Direct offers our Pantry members the convenience of choosing their food online. The Common Pantry is honored to receive this award from Food Bank for New York City.
